The Self-Hating Hipster’s Top 50 Albums of 2013

Two years ago (and change) I compiled a list of the Top 11 Albums of 2011. Last year I put together the Top 12 Albums of 2012. Both articles were compiled of selections culled from lists of approximately 40 albums respectively. After not publishing an article in six months I decided that those once dedicated SHH readers deserved something much more comprehensive for 2013. Instead of publishing a predictably titled Self-Hating Hipster’s Top 13 Albums of 2013 three weeks into January of 2014 I would, as I am wont to do, aim way too high and likely disappoint myself–a Top 50!

The Self-Hating Hipster’s Top 12 Albums of 2012

Year-end articles always seem rather arbitrary and questionably pointless, but one thing is for certain…this year-end article is late. It’s already the fourth week of January 2013! To make the list even more arbitrary I decided to do the Top 12 of 2012 (I did the Top 11 of 2011 last year) and you can expect the Top 52 Tracks of 2012 soon. Grimes – Visions

The Montreal native, Claire Boucher, released her third LP as Grimes this year on the ever-growing, do-no-wrong British label 4AD. Visions is Grimes’ most cohesive and impressive work to date and shows a limitless potential for the one-woman operation. In an interview with, um, Interview Magazine, Boucher dubs her work “post-internet” as opposed to limiting her sound to a genre or genres. “Post-internet” is a term that often pisses some [hipsters] off when they hear it assigned to something, much like the way the term “post-modern” (or even worse…”post-post-modern”) is like styrofoam rubbing against itself for me (does that sound make anybody else want to kill?); Boucher goes on to explain that Continue reading →

The Self-Hating Hipster’s Top 51 Tracks of 2011

As promised, below you will find the Self-Hating Hipster’s T0p 51 Tracks of 2011 thanks to a scramble at my lake house, indirectly motivated by six girls working on their Masters theses. I actually mistakenly published the article about a week ago but quickly made it “Private” so as not to give you readers a glimpse of the SHH in his article underpants. I didn’t realize (stoopit!) what a massive undertaking this article would prove to be as a solo project. I know it’s too late, but I’m hoping that you don’t find it to be too little. I’ve been really busy with my job lately, and in the words of Garth Marenghi, “I’m not Jesus Christ…I’ve come to accept that now.”
