Medications, HIPAA and an Open Letter to Obnoxious Words With Frienders

13 Jan

Let me tell you how my life has been for the past month and a half…(feel free to stop reading now)

I have been working 50-55 hour weeks as it is the busiest time of the year for my line of business.  Thus, I have had some anxiety issues.  By issues, I mean I have three to four mild (jittery, numb, shortness of breath) to medium (shaking, little feeling in my extremities, tightness in my chest and slight hyperventilation) panic attacks a week at work.  I have been on medications to manage long-term and acute anxiety since I was 17.  This week found me completely out of one and running low on the other. Continue reading

Happy Birthday, Nicolas Jaar!

10 Jan

American-Chilean musician, Nicolas Jaar, turns 22 today.  His first LP, Space is Only Noise, came out in January of last year and was one of the 33 albums that were in the running for the Top 11 albums of the year.  He may Continue reading

Congratulations, Andee!

9 Jan

I’d like to take a moment to congratulate our own Andee for accepting a job offer today with a newspaper.  A job transition (let alone transitioning into a writing job) is no easy task, particularly in this economy.  Those of you who have read Andee’s articles have probably 1) enjoyed them, and 2) recognized his wide array of knowledge, talent and wit.  As I understand it, he will be a sports writer and also doing some special interest pieces.  Now his readership will be deservedly expanded.

This just goes to show that at least some of the shit that goes on this site is worthy of publication.  Conrats, Andee!

2011 Self-Hating Superlatives

3 Jan

Right before midnight on New Years Eve, while I was still plugging away at my Top 11 Albums article, I received an email from wordpress.com outlining some of the site’s statistics in 2011.  I’m proud to say that in the first six months we had almost 5,000 views, we published a combined 129 articles and, believe or not, we’ve had visits from readers on the six inhabited continents: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.  When I first started the site, I knew that I couldn’t do anything by myself.  So, I solicited some of my gifted (and opinionated) friends to write.  I want to thank all of you who have contributed this year and I hope that you stay interested and active in 2012.

What wordpress didn’t do was highlight the major players on The Self-Hating Hipster this year and so I thought I owed it to my friends who were extremely dedicated to posting, collaborating with me (i.e. putting up with my bullshit) and ready to offer creative criticism despite how busy they are.   Continue reading

The Self-Hating Hipster’s Top 11 Albums of 2011

2 Jan

This year in music has been a bit lackluster, but that doesn’t mean that there weren’t a few diamonds in the rough.  2011 seems to have been the year of dubstep/chillwave and indie rock rehashes of the past four decades in music. Some did it better than others.

Due to the fact that I drag-assed on this article which was supposed to be released in 2011 (i.e. two days ago) but instead finds itself released on January, 2nd 2012 and because there were a few albums that were almost too close to call, the Top 11 has become the Top 12.  Consider it either a late penalty or a bonus. SHH’s New Years Resolutions

1 Jan

It’s that time again.  That 3-5 week period where we pretend like we’re going to start exercising or flossing.  Where we forget how old we are because we assume that our birthdays are in someway related to the calendar year.  Where we are reminded that we are now one year closer to the apocalypse…whoops, now it’s months away.

I have made a list of a few things that I want to make happen in 2012:

1)  Try more competitive eating challenges.  I always had a knack for it and I’d like to start making some money for going to pound town. Continue reading

Album Reviews and This Year in Music…Pending

30 Dec

I figured I might write a disclaimer for those of you who may or may not be waiting for a “This Year in…” article from me.  Every god damn blog has their year end articles.  I will be releasing the Top 11 Albums of 2011 before the end of this year.  I promise.  If I don’t, nightly self-flagellation (with a whip, that is) and turkey bacon for a whole year.

I’m very meticulous when it comes to rating albums.  I have a formula; seriously (please see my article on spreadsheeting).  If I’m reviewing an album by itself, I listen to it no less than 10 times in it’s entirety.  For this article, because of the volume of music that I’m attempting to speak intelligently about, I have made at least 5 (usually more like 7) listens in an album’s entirety obligatory.

Let’s do some math.  Supposing that your average LP Continue reading

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

27 Dec

In short, this movie was much better than I expected.  My family decided to do the Christmas Day movie thing this year since we celebrated heavier on Christmas Eve (at least I did).  There wasn’t really anything in theaters that I was excited about.  My mother suggested the new Mission Impossible.  I thought the first one was decent.  The second one sucked.  So bad, in fact, that I completely skipped the third one.  I decided to suck it up because family time is important.  Oh, and it was free.

The new one is directed by Brad Bird…who confuses me.  His repertoire consists of a handful of episodes of The Simpsons, Disney and Pixar’s Ratatoullie and The Incredibles and now Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.   I’m thinking an animated film about the Holocaust is his next best bet.  IMDb tells me that Continue reading

Christmas Ornaments: The X-Mas Whack Pack

23 Dec

To usher in the Christmas spirit (not to alienate non-Christians, but I’ve been saying “Happy Holidays” all goddam week to avoid stepping on anyone’s toes) I decided it might be fun to do an article on Christmas ornaments.

Each and every year, at least since I’ve been able to stand up, decorating the Christmas tree has been a family affair.  Once the tree sets, the lights go up.  Then my little sister and I would set all the ornaments out on the floor and have an informal draft.  These drafts could get heated because my sister and I both love really stupid looking things.  Over the years, the draft became a keeper league, and I have built up quite a roster: The X-Mas Whack Pack.

We’ll go one by one… Continue reading

The Descendants

20 Dec

At first, all I heard about this movie was that it was directed by Alexander Payne.  I had seen Election, Sideways, and About Schmidt and thought they were all above average.  I didn’t realize that time had flown since Sideways and Payne hadn’t directed a movie in seven years.  I became intrigued.

Then I heard about Clooney and a possible “Oscar” performance.  My first thought was “shit?”  To be clear, I’m not a Clooney hater; I’m a Clooney skeptic.

I showed up to the theater with some expectations and two heterosexual male friends of mine: fellow contributor, Andy, and my buddy, Brad.  We realized immediately that Continue reading
